Tap water compared to bottled water

Benefits:
  • Bottled water is regulated by the Food Drug Administration (FDA), while tap water is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA standard is stricter than the FDA standards. It has more requirements to be test on water before it can be source of tap water. Therefore, tap water safety is more reliable than bottled water.
  • Tap water is less expensive than bottled water.
  • Using tap water is more environmentally friendly compared to bottled water. In the making of bottled water, large amount of fossil fuel is used to transport it and causes pollution. Bottled water uses plastics, and plastics take about 300 years to be destroyed. The plastic used for bottled water could also contaminate the ground with synthetic chemicals.
  • The plastic used for water bottles are dangerous to be reused.

Risks:
  • It can cause diseases if contaminated, especially to pregnant woman, children, elderly, and people with weak immune system.
  • It could be complicated to install.
  • Long term exposure to chlorination products can cause bladder cancer or miscarriage for pregnant women. Tap water usually uses chlorine for water treatment.
  • Children can be at risk if exposed to high level of fluoridated water. They can have a bone cancer or reduced in IQ levels.
